This article describes a possible application of genetic algorithm (GA) for solving optimal distribution of capacitors used in parallel compensation in MV distribution network. GA has low requirements on the criterial function and therefore it is suitable for the solution of such a combinatory problem. An algorithm is looking for minimum expenses spent on network losses and purchasing and operation of capacitors, all of this under certain limitations. Its functionally is shown on an example of power network.
