The new IEC 61850 standard for substation automation is described in general terms and its application to the development of an IEC 61850-compliant teleprotection system is proposed. The most important aspects to be taken into account, such as object modelling or the performance of the operating system, are described in detail. The results of an interoperability test between a protection and a teleprotection are presented.
