Live Maintenance in substation areas is an old target for Transelectrica and Smart. In the past, there were some trials but the first “real” work was the live replacement of 400 kV busbar insulators in Braşov substation. It was for the first time that the designer thoroughly analyzed both of the working techniques (on deenergised equipment versus Live Working). The chosen live maintenance method had a lot of technical and economical benefits. This paper presents the technical conditions, the economical and technical benefits as well as the applied technology. The methodology of choosing the proper technology is also presented. The important elements of the paper, apart from the working conditions, consist in analysing practical options and how the work was carried out.
