Long-term distribution system planning is recognized as a complex combinatorial problem due to the large number of variables and parameters involved. Throughout the last four decades, various planning methods have been devised including a method proposed by the Authors based on evolutionary algorithms. In order to utilize the heuristic optimization method for everyday planning tasks an advanced module has been produced employing Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Although the primary role of the Module is to link the optimization model with real  data (actual objects) and provide feeder routing, features of the Module allow additional modeling, thus expanding the initial planning method. Benefits include adaptive use of data, advanced modeling of the supply area for routing, flexible routing schemes, etc. Apart from describing the planning method and the actual GIS module, the  focus of this paper is on the additional features of the GIS module.
