A control scheme that enables a DFIG-based wind farm to contribute to network support and operation with respect to transient performance and damping is discussed. It is shown that this control scheme can be implemented in any generic DFIG controller. Time domain simulations and eigenvalue analysis, carried
out on a simple generic network model developed in Simulink that is considered representative of the major areas of the UK electricity system, are employed to demonstrate the control contributions to network operation that are possible with a DFIG-based wind farm employing the presented control scheme. It is illustrated that the employment of suitable control strategies enables DFIG-based wind farms to improve network transient and dynamic stability.
